But my first semester was the Fall after I graduated from college. Since then, I’ve taught the same Photography 101 class four times. Then this time – the fifth – I was lucky enough to teach Advanced Photography with a slant toward Photojournalism.

Tonight was the end of that segment of life. I likely will not be back in a classroom, at least in this capacity, for a while.

And, I lucked out. Every semester, teachers around the world say, “You guys were my best class ever!”

But, this time, this class was.

It just so lined up where all those other classes of Photography 101 congealed into a class of All-Stars. Most of them I had taught before or at least knew were quite capable photographers already.

Even if I didn’t teach them anything, I hope that our time together sharing our passion for this weird art inspires someone to go on to do something really extraordinary. Because, as I was watching them present their final photo essay projects, it was a room full of people passionate about things. And they cared enough about those things to stand up and say: “This is important. Here’s why. And here’s what it looks like.”

Since today was Saturday, I did sit and actually watch all six. And, though I have never actually gone to a midnight premier for any other movie, I will be doing it for Episode 7. But, I won’t be dressing up.

Even people who have spent years in University here don’t realize that these things are only a few minutes away.

Sometimes that means loading up a Brownie camera and going and shooting 120 film for a roll or two. Or maybe an old Kodak or a Hasselblad X-PAN. He takes loads of photos after pulling off to the side of the road and walking out into a field to take a picture of a certain flower that caught his eye.

The new old anti-staleness camera of the moment is my old Leica M8 and a 35/1.4.

As much as I love the Rangefinder, there’s just nothing “easy” about it. And it is stepping back into the raw basics of photography to shoot with them.

So, go do everything you can to be un-stale. Even the best get stale from time to time, but you gotta bust through. And sometimes a change-up of equipment helps!
