Head shoots…

You know those headshots in the Playbills at Broadway plays?

Yep…

For those of you interested, this above was quite a simple setup. Two lights (SB-900 key; SB-600 fill and hair) positioned lower right in an umbrella and very high (practically straight above) left in a shoot thru. Now, that was setup #1.

For setup #2, this was the result:

This was done (almost) completely natural light. I guess you could say “natural” light… no flashes. Standing near a large square window in a classroom for main and the overhead can-lights – not fluorescent – turned on for fill.

Two very different light setups for a relatively similar effect. Main difference is the background, largely because of the intensity of the flash vs. the intensity of window light, the background goes black vs. this mild grey. Regardless of the background color – for the top shot, the background was a dark curtain – the intensity of the light and distance from the background makes all the difference.

Oh, and, for the most part, you might have noticed by hovering your mouse over the images I shoot with both Nikon and Canon quite a bit. However, if you notice my “work” is done with Nikon – my “play” stuff done with Canon. Regardless, there’s something about the Nikon that will always have me going to it. Yeah, sometimes I think Canon has a “feel” to it, but I almost think its a novelty. Nikon I can go to for exactly what I need. I can get more accurate color reproduction and tonality than with the Canon – the 7D is a little too saturated, even clicked back a few notches.

Not to mention the fact that the Nikon fits better with me… big hands.

Stay tuned,
