When the next day starts…

There are many cultures of the world that consider nighttime the beginning of the day. They consider the sun going down as the literal end to the day and the next starts in the evening.

After all, we illustrate things like that, too: “Oh, he’s in his twilight years” to speak of an elderly person.

But then again, we refer to morning as the “start of the new day” or some sort of birth…

…so where does that leave the dark?

Is that why light is “life” and dark is “death”? Maybe in some sort of primal sense, I guess, but as it is, we are naturally evolving better night vision as a physiological human anyway. There aren’t pumas and bears out in the darkness to fear.

So, what is wrong with darkness?

I used to be told, “Nothing good happens after 2am” I guess in an effort to keep me inside and give validity to curfews. But, honestly, I wish I never had to sleep. I’ve gotten great things accomplished and had wonderful experiences and great conversations at 2am or 3am of 4am.

It goes back to one of the most extraordinary classes in my college career while I was at the University of Georgia when we discussed in a religion class the topic: why has the human body become a taboo.

I say, why dark? Why is dark taboo? Why is it that people think that the dark is bad?

Concealment? Quit doing stuff you gotta hide! Fear? Stay out of dark alleys. Sleep? If you sleep just 8 hours a night, that’s a third of your life spent sleeping.

So… no conclusions to this one. Just questions.

Stay tuned,
