Clusters and groups…

My university – similar to other universities – have some sort of thing in the spring that the entire university gets all hyped up about.

Well, Spring Sing is our thing. Its like… all the social clubs (read: frats and sororities) compete against each other making up songs and performances in a sort of festival thing… type thing.

But, for the second year, I do all the official photography for it.

Its fascinating to me to look at huge amounts of portraits like this and see the differences and similarities in people. Differences in skin tones and facial structures.

I don’t ever think portraits would EVER be “my thing” but under certain circumstances, they can be quite enjoyable. Sometimes all it takes is being a little engaging and get them into it and a simple group photo can take on a bit of attitude…

But no matter what, I will always do my best to make portrait sessions – no matter how silly they might seem – somewhat enjoyable for my subjects.

When I say, “And… we’re done!” and they leave… nothing will ever beat the feeling of overhearing them right before the door closes… “Well, that was really fun!”

Its fun and relaxing for them… and I get good images out of it? I can live with that.

Here I am shooting at the end of January for a publication coming out in April. For that, you’ll just have to stay tuned… like… four months.

I like the pictures. I generally enjoy portraits/set up shots, but I still feel like I have a ways to go in knowing how to pose people, what to say to make the subject feel comfortable, and keeping things enjoyable for them. I’d definitely never want to be always confined to a studio-environment.

Also, was your camera-left light gelled? I didn’t notice it yesterday, but it looks like it in the pictures.
