Life and all of the places you could go…

“I am not in this world to live up to other people’s expectations, nor do I feel that the world must live up to mine.” ~Fritz Peris

I remember once upon a time my good friend Jeff Montgomery said something in passing that I thought was brilliantly encouraging. It was many years ago and I remember feeling down for whatever reason – maybe personal, maybe professional – I don’t remember. He was my boss at the time, but we had been busy for a long time without seeing each other. But that particular night we had been shooting the last home basketball game of the season for Harding University before we were to go off to the insanity of the conference championship series.

After the game, we left the arena and before we parted ways for the night, he said: “I know there’s all kinds of stuff that you’re gonna have to deal with, but really it’s a pretty good life.”

Photography and photojournalism is a tough life. In many cases, it requires exactly that: your life. You’ll have days pampered in the penthouse, but more often than not you’ll have days in a cabin in the woods sweating it out with the giant mosquitos. Don’t forget, though, when you’re stuck for weeks in that 105 degree heat, at least you don’t have to worry about your coffee getting cold too quickly.

Stay tuned…
