This says to me, “Contrast.”

Twenty-eight random strangers. I see this and I see contrast.

A paddle-wheel captain…

…a gardener…

…a grandmother and her granddaughter…

…an eccentric pair of men smoking cigars…

…Emily…

…a man from the Netherlands…

…a girl at a hotel desk…

These are the people I had the privilege to meet Wednesday.

I’m a photojournalist. I’m a people photographer. So… I was in the village that was the Chautauqua Institute in western New York state and I photographed people. I locked my camera bag in the trunk of my car and walked around with one camera, one lens… and the Leica.

Twenty-three photographs. I hope I did okay…

Its shocking how similar people look when they’ve been living with each other for 60 years.

Good dog.

Okay, this couple isn’t completely strangers. In fact, he’s a really neat guy. Let me borrow his Summicron 35/2.

A gardener.

The happy motorscooter guy.

The sailboat girl.

“I’ll let you take one of my dogs.” “Okay.”

The journalism intern at the Chautauquan Daily.

The woman I met in Palestine Park.

The fountain girls. I met them once before this photo as they stood in the Bestor Plaza fountain in the shade of the statue.

The Bestor Plaza movie guy.

A grandmother and her granddaughter.

The really creepy yard scarecrow.

The crossword puzzle guy.

“You just want a picture of a classic Chautauquan woman, don’t you?” “Yes, ma’am, I do.”

The boy near the theater.

A man walking his dog.

The sight-seeing locals.

…Emily…  (My favorite photo of the day. Thank you for being such a sweetheart. 🙂 )

The paddle-wheel captain.

The bikers.

The hotel desk girl. (I love her awkward-yet-relaxed hand position.)

Will, from the Netherlands.

The “Cigar Club” of Chautauqua.

Woody Star, the man in the center of the photo above told me: “Find what you love to do, no matter the cost, no matter if you don’t get anything in return. Find what you love to do and do it. You’ll never go wrong.”

This is what I love. I talked to these people from maybe 30 seconds to 30 minutes. If any of you pictured here are reading this, thank you for letting me share a moment or two of your life. I hope I did you justice. Thank you.

Otherwise, stay tuned,

-Noah D.
