With good people…

Some things that happen defy classification or explanation… and a single photo could not do it justice.

Mohamed, our new friend and guide in Fes, Morocco, invited us to his home to dinner with his family. No photos or videos or words in the world could describe such an event.

More generosity than I have seen in a long time and with more excitement and gusto than I felt I could ever deserve, we were invited in and fed and watched the soccer/football games as the kids ran around… almost as if we belonged there.

In situations like this, you remember how deep true “traveling” really goes. It is more than just an education, more than just seeing places and taking photos. These places do teach you things and make for interesting “this one time…” stories. But causal tourism does nothing for the world except move money around the surface.

Real travel can impact the people in a place that you go. Maybe something you do or say might make an impact on them in some way. Hopefully positive, but nevertheless, you being in a place changed something… the rest of the change is up to you.

Of course the places that I have been have changed me. My magazine article back in 2008 told all about that story and photos. But I have only recently begun to realize that the smallest of details can set off a chain of events…

…but again, it is up to you whether it is for the good or bad.

Speaking of that, today’s photo of the day… brought to you by a tiny spark:

This fire burnt up stores in a historical part of the Fes medina last night. Part of it had been renovated by UNESCO recently since this whole town is considered a World Heritage Site.

In fact, a part that I had been and photographed only yesterday:

It is amazing what terrible destruction or wonderful creations can be caused by the smallest of things.

Stay tuned…
